At the end of the 20 century ,the world is changing in important ways. Until recently ,nations acted independently. Each country did its business and tried to solve its problems alone. But now, the economy is worldwide and communications technologies have connected people all over the globe. Many problems are global, too, and can no longer be solved by individual nations.
Environmental destruction is one of these problems. As the world's population has grown and technology has developed, the environment has suffered. Some nations have begun to try to stop the pollution and the environmental destruction .But the environment is global-?the atmosphere, the oceans ,and many forms of life are all connected. Thus, the solution require global thinking. The problem of ocean pollution is a good example. All the oceans of the world are connected.Pollution doesn't stay where it begins. It spreads out from every river and every harbor and affectsbodies of water everywhere.
For centuries, people have used the oceans as dumping place. Many cities take tons of
garbage out to sea and dump it there. The quantity of garbage that ends up in the water is incredible. Five million plastic containers are thrown into the world's ocean. These include human waste and chemicals used in agriculture. And every year, oil tankers accidentally spill millions of gallons of oil into the sea.
Some people believe that the oceans are so large that chemicals and waste will disappear. However, many things, such as chemicals and plastics, stay in the water and create problems. They eventually float to shore and are eaten by tiny sea creatures. Then the larger animals that eat the tiny creatures are poisoned and die. Harbors and coasts around the world have become unsafe for humans or animals. The world's fish populations are rapidly shrinking.Another global pollution, problem concerns the atmosphere .Until recently ,chlorfluorocarbons(CFCs)were used around the world in manufacturing refrigerators. Scientists discovered that theseCFCs were destroying the ozone layer in the atmosphere. The ozone layer helps protect the earthfrom the sun's rays. without this layer, most forms of life on earth--including humans--robably would not be able to live.
CFCs will soon be completely banned in the United States and in most developed countriesare some of the most populous on earth, such as India and China. These countries need to changetheir refrigerator factories to non-CFC processes. But they may not be able to make this change alone. They will need help from the industrialized countries. This is what global thinking means--orking together for solutions.

    40.This passage is about _____.
     A. are pollution B. old ways of thinking
      C. global thinking  D. refrigerator factories in China
41 .Until now, most nations followed the principal that _____.

      D. What happens in China affects everyone.
42.The solution to ocean pollution requires global thinking because____.
      A. no one cares about the ocean
      B. the oceans are so large.
      C. more oil is needed in the developing countries.
      D. all the world's oceans are connected.
43.Nations must leam to think globally because____.
      A. communication technologies will solve our problems
      B. large businesses will spread around the world
      C. changes in the world require stronger nations
      D. that is the only way to solve global problems
44.You may infer from this passage that in the past______.
      A. problems were more local
      B. nations were more interested in the environment

Are some people bom clever, and others stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is YES To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child bom with low intelligence .On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundingsThus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment .This views, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are bom with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(Ml^) from the population, it is likely that their degreeof intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins They will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters .parents and children .usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one .for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring We would soon find differences in intelligence developing and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also supported by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

    45.According to the passage, a child _____
      A. Bom with low intelligence will never become a genius
      B. Bom with low intelligence will become a genius through special education
      C. living in rich and varied surroundings will develop his intelligence beyond the limits fixed at birth
      D. Jiving in a boring situation will not develop his intelligence at all
46.As far as intelligence is concerned, most experts now believe that
      A. birth is more important role than birth
      B. environment plays a more important role than birth
      C. birth and environment are both important
      D. neither birth nor environment really matters
47.Which of the following groups of people are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence?
      A. Two identical twins who are raised and educated in different environments
      B. People who are neither in close contact nor related at all.
      C. People who don't live in close contact but are closely related.
      D. People who live in close contact but are not related at all.
48.The author's purpose of writing this passage is
      A. to emphasize(强调) the importance of environment in intelligence development
      B. to argue that factories should beautify the dull setting
      C. to explain how birth and environment influence intelligence
      D. to support the view that both birth and environment influence intelligence
                                 D
American children are on a spending spree (花钱如流水) .In many homes, small children spend $l.7 a week to $ 22 a week on candy, games, entertainment and magazines. Parents feel guilty about denying their children anything the children want and so they never turn them down.
The cost is staggedng(惊人的)Children between g and ls spend or influence their families to spend $ 40 billion a year.
There are 25 million children in that age group. Advertising executives(经理) nicknamed them "tweens " (指9—15岁的孩子) because they are between childhood and high school. Madison Avenue---the shorthand expression for advertising agencies that once were clustered (丛生 群集) on a New York street-- barrages tweens with TV ads.
Tweens buy more than candy and toys. They shop for laundry detergent (清洁剂) ,groceries and other products. They're big consumers (消费者) of expensive clothing. When one tween at a school buys a pair of $45 blue jeans or $60 tennis shoes, other children beg their parents for the same items. Some tweens even have a say in what kind of car the family buys.Parents who feel unable to control their children's spending can turn to books for advice. There are six books advising on how to cope with children's overspending.
They advise parents to put their children on an allowance--a set amount of money given to them each week. If a child wants expensive sunglasses ,the books advise parents to pay part of the bill, but make the child save for the rest.
Parents blame Madison Avenue for their children's poor spending habits. A camera company gave away some of its new cameras to children at a shopping mall. the company used film of those children in its TV ads.
But many parents have poor spending habits themselves .Many live beyond their means bypiling up bills on credit cards and falling into debt. "If you are in hock up to your ears, buy a new car every year ,then tell your children not to be greedy, do you think they'll listen?" asks the author of a Teenager's Guide to Money, Banking and Finance.
Parents who overspend often raise children who overspend ,a cycle that's not good foranyone, that may explain why America is so far in debt, and why erasing the national debt may be so hard for the American government.

A survey released on Monday by a highway safety group showed that three out of four adults in the United States favor laws to curb(路边) the use of cellular telephones while driving .Though nearly two out of three people surveyed report owning a cellular phone, the Louis Harris poll(调查)found a 76 percent backed(支持) restricting their use by drivers except in emergencies .In addition, cell phone use in vehicle topped the list of concerns, closely followed by drunk driving and improving safety at intersections.

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association has called wireless phones, the greatest safety tool on the highway since the emergency 911 telephone number was introduced--as long as drivers use their judiciously.
No federal law bars the use of cell phones while driving but several states prohibit (禁止)phones being held by hand while driving except the emergencies. The National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration said earlier this year that the use of wireless phone in vehicles had become a significant highway safety concern but termed it early to push for federal regulation.
